Why greed may be preferable to ideals...

Alan Watts, the Buddhist philosopher and interpreter of Zen, put it this way, in a lecture made during the late 1960's. (This is not an exact quote)

Wars for acquisition (resources, property, factories, etc) tend always to be less destructive than wars of ideology (clash of cultures), since the aggressor wants to own and use those factories, that farmland, those resources. Whereas ideological war is hell-bent on total destruction of the other people.
