Miers Supported Ban on Most Abortions
"Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers pledged support in 1989 for a constitutional amendment banning abortions except when necessary to save the life of the mother, according to material given to the Senate on Tuesday.
'If Congress passes a Human Life Amendment to the Constitution that would prohibit abortion except when it was necessary to prevent the death of the mother, would you actively support its ratification by the Texas Legislature,' asked an April 1989 questionnaire sent out by the Texans United for Life group.
Miers checked 'yes' to that question, and all of the group's questions, including whether she would oppose the use of public moneys for abortions and whether she would use her influence to keep 'pro-abortion' people off city health boards and commissions..."
"A candidate taking a political position in the course of a campaign is different from the role of a judge making a ruling in the judicial process." said Jim Dyke, a White House spokesman.
Pay no attention to the Fundie Fascist behind the curtain, eh?
--- JIM DYKE? Ah, a pity Charles Dickens couldn't have lived to be 193 to see this.
There was a basic concept involved in the founding of this country:
Anyone is free to live by the premise: "This is what I will do with my life."
No one has the right to dictate: "This is what YOU must do with YOUR life. Least of all religious fanatics.
(I define a religious fanatic as anyone who refuses to allow another to disagree on spiritual matters, to follow his or her own path in life, even if it is not one the demagogue would choose for himself or herself, who refuses to recognize that each person must make his or her own decisions.)
This concept was even an integral part of the first coin minted in this country -- the famous Fugio cent of 1787 -- stamped into the metal were the words: "Mind Your Business."
I can hardly believe anyone in this current administration does not live by the adage MONEY TALKS.
Those are the concepts that SHOULD be held dear by so-called ORIGINALISTS.
In other words -- morality arguments aside, it's time to once again tell the Miers and the Falwells and the Robertsons and the Dobsons the simple American message:
"DON'T TREAD ON ME."
(Or updated: "BACK THE FUCK OFF, BIBLE BOYS.")
